ChatGPT is growing up: Inflection-2

ChatGPT, the second most powerful commercially available language model as of today, only surpassed by GPT-4, which belongs to the same company: OpenAI. They just can’t stop growing.

Google’s Bard, Meta’s open-source Llama 2, Anthropic’s Claude… and now Inflection-2.

But let’s start from the beginning…

🐇 What is Inflection?

Inflection is a super cool AI company, or as they define themselves:

Our studio is comprised of the world’s leading AI developers, creative designers, writers, and innovators, working together in a deeply multidisciplinary fashion to create a new class of digital experiences.

This is an era of exponential change. Our name, Inflection, reflects this moment of transformation, while our status as a public benefit corporation gives us the legal mandate to prioritize the well-being and happiness of our users and other stakeholders above all else.

Inflection is the name of the artificial intelligence they develop; PI is their current conversational AI, and they have just released Inflection-2. Inflection (yes, the model and the company have the same name) is made up of former employees from DeepMind, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and OpenAI.

They claim on their own website that, although not yet monetized, they plan to generate revenue using a membership system, likely with OpenAI, in a way that allows them to align the AI tool offered with the interests of their clients.

What do they mean by this? The famous “human alignment” that has been much talked about lately in the AI community. And at this point, I completely agree with them; monetization has to happen in some way. If it’s not through direct payment, then it will be through your data, advertising, etc. Both models have their advantages and disadvantages, and it’s up to the individual to choose.

The “super cool company” label is not just for everything mentioned above, which is quite significant, but also for other statements on their page like: “We do not intend to create an AGI (Artificial General Intelligence).” Because they imply that doing so would, in some way, be detrimental to humanity.

Some notes to keep in mind:

  • According to them, they do not sell your data, meaning your conversations.
  • The AI does not contain advertising, meaning the AI does not recommend sponsored products.
  • The company’s employees CAN read your conversations.
  • The use of the AI for illegal purposes is not allowed, which goes without saying, but neither are uses that involve “hate,” “discrimination,” etc. For those of us accustomed to using AI created in Silicon Valley, we know exactly what they mean.
  • PI, the AI, remembers conversations, meaning each time you talk to it, it’s not like starting a new conversation, as is currently the case with OpenAI’s ChatGPT.

✨ Inflection-2

They have just released Inflection-2, an AI language model that is capable of competing head-to-head with ChatGPT, according to the company itself. It surpasses ChatGPT, being smarter and outperforming it in most tests or benchmarks.

From my own experience, after having used more than a dozen language models and always seeing their benchmarks, I can say that every company, organization, and community tends to cherry-pick the tests they show, implying that their model is more powerful than it really is, and this time is no exception.

PI, which I’m not sure if it currently uses Inflection-2 or the original, is less intelligent than ChatGPT in my usage experience, facing the same problems. I would say that PI currently is at the level of LLama 2, which is not insignificant.

🏅 How powerful or intelligent, in your philosophical view, is Inflection-2?

In this section you can see how Inflection-2 compares with other language models, the largest and most intelligent today.

It is a reading comprehension test.

🪄 How to use Pi

Currently you can use Inflection’s AI PI, free of charge through different means, I leave here the links:

👨‍💻 Pi(Inflection) API for developers and enterprises

For my dear developer readers, I’m leaving here how to obtain the API, as it is quite hidden at the moment, and you can find threads on Reddit discussing where it is or if it’s available.

Yes, PI, but it’s not freely accessible; you must be manually approved. Let’s hope this changes in the future and they open it up more to all developers, which will likely happen as it did with OpenAI and Anthropic.

You can get access to the Inflection API by filling out this Google Forms form.

🧑‍💼 Comment and opinion on PI

Since it’s not very well-known, there isn’t much information about this AI, but fortunately, they explain quite a bit on their own website.

It’s undoubtedly another competitor among the large language models, especially after having used it. Although it seems that there isn’t a very large team behind it at the moment, as they themselves claim.

In terms of capacity it is well below models such as GPT4 in general.
